AI SDR or human SDR: what does each cost in India and what actually works?

Updated 12 October 20269 sources, each openedNo paid placements

The short answer

An AI SDR costs less per touch and handles list building, follow-up and scheduling well, but the evidence we could open says humans do better on larger deals1. Nearly every number comes from a seller of AI tools, so compare only inside one source. For most Indian B2B firms the defensible setup is hybrid: software drafts and follows up, and a person owns every real conversation.

Key facts

  1. A vendor that sells AI SDR software, Instantly, reports a platform average reply rate of 3.43 percent, 5.5 percent for the top quartile and 10.7 percent or more for elite senders, and sets it beside a 5.8 percent figure from a different dataset, so the two are not like for like1.
  2. AiSDR, another seller, surveyed 75 companies and practitioners and reports reply rates rising from 2.4 percent to 8.2 percent by month 6, and meetings a month from 12 to 38, while saying the survey did not capture revenue return2.
  3. MyOperator, which sells AI sales agents, models a fully loaded human SDR in India at about Rs 1,18,000 a month and its AI calling agent at about Rs 81,000 a month for 3,000 calls3.
  4. Indeed's India page for business development representatives shows an average base of Rs 27,194 a month from 29 reported salaries, last updated 18 February 20264.
  5. Instantly says human SDRs still outperform AI on deals above $25K in annual contract value1.
  6. LinkedIn bans third-party bots that send messages or add contacts, and says accounts that use them can be restricted or closed5.

What does a human SDR cost in India compared with an AI SDR?

Start with the one India-specific model we could open. MyOperator assumes a base salary of Rs 50,000 to Rs 80,000 a month, adds statutory contributions, sales tools of about Rs 10,000, management time and variable pay, and reaches about Rs 1,07,200 a month. With ramp-up and attrition spread out, it becomes about Rs 1,18,0003.

Its AI agent comes to about Rs 81,000 a month: a Rs 40,000 platform fee, Rs 18,000 of usage for 3,000 calls, Rs 15,000 of configuration and management, and a one-time Rs 1,00,000 build spread over 12 months3. At about Rs 96.6 to the dollar (RBI reference rate, 9 October 2026), that is roughly $1,220 for the human and $840 for the AI agent a month6. The vendor sells the AI side, so read the gap as its estimate.

Treat the salary line with care. Indeed's India page for business development representatives shows an average base of Rs 27,194 a month, but from only 29 reported salaries4. Job titles and employers may differ from MyOperator's assumption, so the two do not contradict each other. They show how far the human line moves with who you hire.

The software itself is cheap. Instantly lists plans from $47 a month for 5,000 emails up to $358 a month for 500,0007, and AiSDR lists plans at $250, $900 and $2,500 a month for 200 to 2,500 AI-researched contacts8. Tools are only part of the bill. A list, a sending setup, someone to read replies and someone to take meetings make up the rest.

Which one books more meetings?

No neutral study settles this. Every dataset we opened comes from a seller of AI sales software, so compare numbers only inside one source. Instantly's report puts its platform average reply rate at 3.43 percent, with the top quarter of campaigns above 5.5 percent and elite senders at 10.7 percent or more. It sets that beside a 5.8 percent figure from another publisher's 2024 average, which is a different dataset and not a like-for-like test1.

AiSDR surveyed 75 companies and practitioners. It reports reply rates rising from 2.4 percent before its tool to 6.8 percent at month 3 and 8.2 percent at month 6, and meetings a month rising from 12 to 31 to 38. Its own page says the survey did not capture revenue return, so more meetings is not shown to mean more sales2.

On quality, another AI SDR seller, Rhino Agents, says AI-booked meetings show up 60 to 70 percent of the time against 75 to 85 percent for human-booked ones9. The page names no study for it, so use it as a direction, not a measurement.

What is the hybrid setup that makes sense?

Even Instantly, which sells the AI side, recommends a split. Software handles list building and enrichment, first outreach, follow-up timing, reply sorting and CRM logging. People handle live phone qualification, objections and the handover to whoever closes1.

It ties the split to deal size. Under $25K in annual contract value, AI-led works. From $25K to $100K, it suggests an inside sales team with AI support. Above $100K, it says human-led, with AI doing research and cadence1. For a small Indian B2B firm with a few high-value accounts, that points to one human owner of each conversation and software for the repetitive parts.

What goes wrong when software sends on its own?

Two limits sit outside the tool. First, mailbox providers watch complaints and volume. AI-written text does not by itself break deliverability, but unreviewed volume does, as we explain in our deliverability answer. Second, LinkedIn bans third-party bots that send messages or add contacts5. Some AI SDR plans bundle LinkedIn accounts, such as AiSDR's Solo plan with one LinkedIn account8, so ask any seller how that part stays inside LinkedIn's rules.

Legal exposure stays with you as well. On our reading, a named person's work email is personal data under India's DPDP Act, which we cover in is cold email legal in India.

What should a quote show before you pay?

Whether you buy a tool or a service, ask for these in writing:

  • Tool cost, set-up cost and monthly management cost as three separate lines.
  • Who approves each message before it is sent.
  • What counts as a meeting: booked, or actually held.
  • Who owns the domain, mailboxes and contact list if you stop.
  • How opt-outs are recorded and honoured.

What KanavuLab does

KanavuLab does AI lead generation as a hybrid, not a robot SDR. Agents find companies, research them and draft follow-ups. A person approves every message before it is sent.

We send no automated LinkedIn messages or connection requests, we honour every opt-out, and we show exactly what we count as a lead on what counts as a lead.

Accounts and domains are in your name from day one. Scope and price are quoted after a 20-minute call.

Follow-up questions

Is an AI SDR cheaper than a human SDR in India?

On the one India model we could open, yes: about Rs 81,000 a month against about Rs 1,18,000, though its author sells AI agents and its salary assumption is higher than Indeed's average base for a similar role34. Cheaper per touch is not the same as cheaper per held meeting.

Can an AI SDR replace a human SDR completely?

Not on the evidence we could open. Even Instantly, which sells the software, keeps humans on live qualification, objection handling and deals above $25K in annual contract value1.

What reply rate should I expect from AI cold email?

The published numbers we opened run from 2.4 percent to 10.7 percent depending on who measured and how: a 3.43 percent platform average at Instantly1, and 2.4 percent rising to 8.2 percent over six months in AiSDR's survey2. Benchmark against your own baseline, not a vendor's.

Does an AI SDR use LinkedIn automation?

Some products do, but LinkedIn bans third-party bots that send messages or add contacts5. KanavuLab sends no automated LinkedIn messages or connection requests.
